RTP and house edge: what the percentage actually measures
Return to player is a modelling figure. It states the proportion of everything wagered on a game that the maths model returns to players once the sample is large enough to be meaningful — millions of resolved bets, not an evening. The remainder is the house edge. A game certified at 96.00% carries a 4.00% edge.
The distinction that costs players money is what the edge applies to. It applies to turnover, not to your deposit. Wager one unit per spin for a thousand spins and you have put a thousand units across the game, and the theoretical cost sits against that thousand — not against the fifty you walked in with. This is why stake size matters more than session length, and why the same balance played at a higher stake is exposed to a proportionally larger expected cost.
It is also why RTP cannot be experienced. No individual player generates a sample anywhere near large enough for the average to assert itself. A session is a small, noisy draw from a wide distribution, and it will usually land somewhere other than the headline number.
Volatility: the same cost, a different ride
Volatility answers a question RTP is silent on: how is the return distributed? A low-volatility game spreads its modelled return across frequent, modest awards. A high-volatility game concentrates the same return into rarer, heavier events, which means long stretches returning very little punctuated by outcomes that carry most of the value.
Two games can share an identical RTP and sit at opposite ends of this scale. Their long-run cost is the same. Their session behaviour is not remotely comparable, and neither tells you anything about what the next spin will do. Volatility is a description of shape, not a forecast.
Provider labels here are loose. "Medium-high" is a marketing register rather than a measured constant, and studios do not apply the terms identically. Treat the label as a rough steer and the game's own behaviour — trigger frequency, the gap between the top paytable entries and the rest — as the better guide.
Hit rate and the losing win
Hit rate counts how often a spin returns anything at all. It does not ask whether what came back exceeded what went in, and on most modern slots a large share of registered hits are worth less than the stake that bought them.

A game that has gone four hundred spins without a bonus is in exactly the same position as one that triggered on the last spin, because the generator does not track drought. Stake sizing and turnover
The one variable fully under your control is turnover. Stake multiplied by spins gives total exposure, and expected cost scales directly with it. Halving the stake halves the theoretical cost of the same number of spins.
A useful habit is to decide the number of spins you want before you decide the stake, then divide. If a budget of a hundred units should last three hundred spins, the stake is roughly a third of a unit — and if the game's minimum makes that impossible, the honest conclusion is that the game is priced above the budget, not that the budget should stretch.

Misconceptions worth discarding
- "It is due." Independent outcomes do not accumulate obligation. A drought is not a signal.
- "Bigger stakes trigger features sooner." Stake scales what an outcome pays, not the probability of reaching it, unless the rules explicitly say otherwise.
- "High RTP means low risk." RTP and volatility are separate axes. A high-RTP, high-volatility game can be brutal over a short session.
- "The maximum win is a target." It is a theoretical ceiling, often reachable only through a symbol and multiplier combination whose probability is vanishingly small.
- "I can read the pattern." Sessions are far too small a sample to infer either probability or value from, which is precisely why the model is safe to publish.
- "The near miss meant something." Near misses are a presentation choice. The result was fixed before the reels rendered.
The short version
RTP is a long-run cost rate applied to turnover. Volatility describes how unevenly that cost arrives. The RNG has no memory, so nothing is ever owed to you. Does a higher RTP mean I am more likely to win?
