Dragon Link is Aristocrat's second major link family, launched after Lightning Link and built on the same foundation. Titles include Autumn Moon, Golden Century, Panda Magic, Peacock Princess, Genghis Khan and Spring Festival.
Like its predecessor it is a brand covering separate games, each with its own reels, paytable and maths. Configurations from roughly 87% to 96% have been reported across the series — a range too wide to function as a specification.
How it differs from Lightning Link
The engines are close cousins, but there are real differences worth knowing.
The trigger symbol. Dragon Link uses fireballs, and the feature commonly requires six to start rather than Lightning Link's typical count. A higher trigger threshold means a rarer feature, which pushes more of the game's value into the round when it does arrive.
The theming. Dragon Link's titles lean almost entirely on Chinese and East Asian motifs, where Lightning Link ranges more widely. This is a commercial segmentation rather than a mechanical one, but it is why venues often install both families side by side — they serve overlapping but distinct audiences.
The reputation. Dragon Link is generally regarded as the higher-variance of the two families. Given that both span an 87–96% configuration range, treat that as a description of typical player experience rather than a specification.
The Hold & Spin mechanic
Cash-value fireballs land and lock in place, awarding a set number of respins. Each new fireball locks and resets the respin counter. The round ends when the respins run out; filling the grid takes the Grand.
The same caution applies as on any hold-and-win game: the resetting counter creates a sense of momentum that does not exist. Each respin is independent. A round eight respins deep is no more likely to continue than one on its first.
Mini, Minor, Major, Grand
Four progressive tiers on linked installations, fed by a bank of contributing machines.
The important consequence, stated plainly: jackpot funding comes out of the same return that pays ordinary wins. A linked Dragon Link machine and a standalone pokie advertising the same percentage are not equivalent — the linked machine has committed part of that percentage to a pot the overwhelming majority of players will never take, so ordinary play feels tighter.
If you are playing for the Grand, that trade is the point. If you are playing for a session, a non-jackpot machine at the same configured return will generally give you more play for your money.
Theme-specific free games
Each title carries its own free games round in addition to Hold & Spin. Golden Century's round is not Panda Magic's. This is the main reason experience with one Dragon Link title transfers poorly to another.
Two versions of this game, two different sets of numbers
Aristocrat games exist in two forms with genuinely different mathematics, and almost every site conflates them.
| Australian venue pokie | Online conversion | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you play it | Clubs, pubs, casinos | Overseas licensed casinos |
| Legal for AU residents | Yes, in venue | No — prohibited under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 |
| Return | Set by operator configuration within state minimum | Varies by title; 87–96% range reported |
| Is the return displayed? | Usually not | Yes, in the info screen |
| Maximum bet | $5–$10 per spin depending on state | Operator-dependent |
| Jackpots | Linked progressives across a venue bank | Networked within the operator |
The venue version
The figure that matters in a club is the configured return, chosen by the venue operator within the statutory minimum for your state or territory — not by Aristocrat, and not by the game's design.
| Jurisdiction | Minimum RTP | Max bet per spin |
|---|---|---|
| Victoria, ACT | 87% | $5 |
| South Australia | 87.5% | $5 |
| NSW | 85% | $10 |
| Queensland, Tasmania, NT | 85% | $5 (sources vary) |
Minimums per the Australian Gambling Research Centre; Victoria's $5 cap is set by the VGCCC under the Australian/New Zealand Gaming Machine National Standard. Casino machines generally sit above these club and pub floors.
The configured return is usually not displayed on the machine. You can press the information button for the paytable, but the actual RTP setting normally is not shown. There is no consumer-facing fix for this.
Other venue rules worth knowing: in NSW, prize money above $2,000 must be paid by cheque or electronic transfer rather than cash, ATMs are banned from gaming areas, and there is a mandatory shutdown between 4am and 10am. Queensland club and hotel machines carry reported win limits of $10,000, or $25,000 on a jackpot.
The online version
Online Dragon Link deployments carry the same Hold & Spin engine and four-tier jackpot structure. As with the venue installations, the specific title determines the maths — Golden Century and Panda Magic are different games, online or otherwise.
Online builds are deployed to regulated markets overseas, mainly North America. They are not legal for Australian residents to play for real money. We cover their figures because they are the only published per-game numbers that exist for this catalogue, and because they tell you something real about the game's design — but they do not describe the machine on your local floor.
The practical gap is large. An online build at the upper end of its 87–96% range against a venue machine configured near its state minimum of 85–87% is a difference of roughly eight to ten percentage points of turnover. Same artwork, same features, materially different product.
