Queen of the Nile is the oldest game covered anywhere on this site. The original cabinet dates to 1997, which makes it older than online casinos as a category.

It is also, more than any other single title, the game that made Aristocrat an international company rather than an Australian one.

Why a 1997 game still matters

Queen of the Nile established the Egyptian-queen template that the entire industry then copied. IGT's Cleopatra followed. Every book-of-Egypt slot, every pyramid scatter, every expanding-queen wild traces back through this lineage.

The core design is startlingly simple by modern standards:

  • Queen symbol acts as wild
  • Pyramid symbol acts as scatter, triggering free games
  • Free games carry a multiplier
  • 20 adjustable lines — you choose how many to play

That last point is worth dwelling on. Adjustable lines were standard in 1997 and are nearly extinct now. Modern games almost universally use fixed lines or ways, because line selection confuses players and complicates the maths. Playing Queen of the Nile with five lines active is a materially different game from playing it with twenty — different hit frequency, different effective stake, different distribution.

If you play this game, play all twenty lines. Any published figure describing its behaviour assumes full line coverage.

The version problem is worse here than anywhere

This game has been through more hardware generations and conversions than almost any pokie in existence: the original cabinet, multiple Aristocrat platform revisions, Queen of the Nile II, Queen of the Nile Legends, and online builds for overseas regulated markets.

They are not the same game. The 94.88% and 1,250x figures above describe an online conversion. They do not describe a 1997 cabinet, and they do not describe the machine in your local club.

We are stating this more forcefully than usual because for a game with a thirty-year deployment history, "the RTP" is not a meaningful concept without naming the build.

What 1,250x means in context

Modest, and appropriately so. This is a five-by-three grid with twenty lines and a multiplied free games round — there is no cascade, no multiplier ladder, no accumulating mechanic. The ceiling is what a straightforward line-pay game with a feature multiplier produces.

For comparison, Ways of the Qilin from a modern studio caps at 7,106x and Aztec Magic Megaways at 12,960x. Queen of the Nile is not competing on ceiling and never was.

Two versions of this game, two different sets of numbers

Aristocrat games exist in two forms with genuinely different mathematics, and almost every site conflates them.

The venue version

The figure that matters in a club is the configured return, chosen by the venue operator within the statutory minimum for your state or territory — not by Aristocrat, and not by the game's design.

Jurisdiction Minimum RTP Max bet per spin
Victoria, ACT 87% $5
South Australia 87.5% $5
NSW 85% $10
Queensland, Tasmania, NT 85% $5 (sources vary)

Minimums per the Australian Gambling Research Centre; Victoria's $5 cap is set by the VGCCC under the Australian/New Zealand Gaming Machine National Standard. Casino machines generally sit above these club and pub floors.

The configured return is usually not displayed on the machine. You can press the information button for the paytable, but the actual RTP setting normally is not shown. There is no consumer-facing fix for this.

Other venue rules worth knowing: in NSW, prize money above $2,000 must be paid by cheque or electronic transfer rather than cash, ATMs are banned from gaming areas, and there is a mandatory shutdown between 4am and 10am. Queensland club and hotel machines carry reported win limits of $10,000, or $25,000 on a jackpot.

The online version

The online conversion preserves the 1997 design almost intact — 5x3, twenty adjustable lines, queen wild, pyramid scatter, multiplied free games — at a reported 94.88%. Note that the adjustable lines carry over, so the same advice applies: play all twenty, because every published figure assumes full coverage.

Online builds are deployed to regulated markets overseas, mainly North America. They are not legal for Australian residents to play for real money. We cover their figures because they are the only published per-game numbers that exist for this catalogue, and because they tell you something real about the game's design — but they do not describe the machine on your local floor.

The practical gap is large. An online build at 94.88% against a venue machine configured near its state minimum of 85–87% is a difference of roughly eight to ten percentage points of turnover. Same artwork, same features, materially different product.

See our Aristocrat provider page for the full comparison across the catalogue.
