What Multifly! is

Multifly! MultiMax is Yggdrasil's 2020 chameleon-themed slot and the debut title for the studio's MultiMax mechanic. It uses a five-reel layout with 243 ways to win, Dropdown wins and reel-specific multipliers. The clever part is how Wilds and multipliers are tied together: each continuing cascade can strengthen the reels that matter to later wins.

This is not one global multiplier sitting above the grid. Each reel maintains its own multiplier value for the current sequence, which means the position of Wilds matters as much as the raw number of them.

How Dropdown wins work

After a winning combination, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols fall into the open positions. That can create another win without requiring a new paid spin. Different studios call this cascade, avalanche, tumble or dropdown behaviour; the important idea is that one wager can contain a chain of evaluated grids.

Multifly adds a second layer to that chain. After a Dropdown win, a Wild is added to one of the winning positions. The new Wild can help the next evaluation and, crucially, also strengthens the multiplier on its reel.

The MultiMax reel multipliers

Each reel has its own multiplier. Yggdrasil explains that every Wild landing on a reel increases that reel's multiplier. When a win uses at least one symbol on that reel, its multiplier can contribute to the payout. Cascades therefore do two things at once: they create another chance to win and can raise the value of the reels involved in later wins.

The mechanic rewards sequence length. A one-and-done win may barely develop the grid. A long Dropdown chain can accumulate several Wilds and larger reel multipliers before the sequence ends.

How multiple reel multipliers combine

The important MultiMax detail is that activated reel multipliers can combine across the reels participating in a win. Yggdrasil's technical explanation describes the effective win multiplier as the product of the relevant reel multipliers. In simple terms, a win crossing reels with 2x, 3x and 4x multipliers can be amplified far more than a single flat 4x multiplier.

That product effect is why the mechanic can escalate quickly. It is also why a large number shown above a reel is not automatically applied to every win: the combination must actually use that reel. Position and connectivity still matter.

Why Free Spins are different

Three Scatters trigger the Free Spins feature. The strongest rule is persistence: the reel multipliers accumulated on the triggering base-game sequence carry into the Free Spins and continue increasing as more Wilds land. They do not reset between each free spin in the same way they reset between ordinary paid bets.

That turns the bonus into a longer state-building exercise. An early Wild can matter for many later spins, and a strong triggering cascade can give the feature a head start. This is the source of much of the game's upper-tail volatility.

What resets and what persists

In the base game, Yggdrasil states that reel multipliers reset to 1x at the start of a new bet. So a powerful multiplier chain does not remain forever just because the next paid spin is placed immediately. The state belongs to the current cascade sequence.

If Free Spins trigger, the accumulated multipliers from that triggering sequence are carried into the feature and remain live until the free games and their cascades are finished. Understanding that boundary prevents a common mistake: thinking a high multiplier displayed at the end of one normal spin makes the next paid spin unusually valuable.

243 ways versus paylines

Multifly uses 243 ways rather than fixed paylines. Winning symbols generally need to appear on consecutive reels from the left, but their exact row positions do not have to follow a drawn line. That creates more positional flexibility than a 20- or 25-line game.

The ways system also interacts naturally with reel multipliers because a win is defined by the reels it crosses. When reading a result, think in terms of which reels participated and which of their multipliers were active, not which numbered payline was hit.

Why the game is high volatility

High volatility follows from the compounding design. Much of the excitement comes from rare sequences where Dropdowns continue, Wilds accumulate, multiple reel multipliers grow and a later win crosses several upgraded reels. Most paid spins cannot reproduce that full chain.

Because cascades do not require a new paid wager, a long sequence can feel like extra spins without extra turnover. That is correct for the individual cascade chain. But once the next paid spin begins, new turnover is created and the multipliers reset.

Stake sizing in practice

The sensible stake is one that can survive ordinary sequences where MultiMax never has time to build. Do not size the bet around the best-case screenshot. High volatility means the game must also contain many outcomes where the multiplier framework contributes little or nothing.

A fixed loss limit and a fixed time limit are more useful than a goal such as “play until I get a good multiplier”. There is no guarantee a long Dropdown chain arrives within any chosen number of spins.

A worked MultiMax example

Imagine a cascade has built reel multipliers of 2x on reel one, 3x on reel two and 4x on reel three, while reels four and five remain at 1x. A winning combination that uses the first three reels can activate the upgraded values on those participating reels. Under Yggdrasil's MultiMax description, the relevant reel multipliers combine multiplicatively, so the effective amplification can become much larger than simply adding 2 + 3 + 4.

Now change the result so the win starts on reel one but does not use a Wild or qualifying symbol on the upgraded third reel. The 4x displayed there may contribute nothing to that particular combination. This is why screenshots of large reel multipliers are incomplete evidence of a payout: you also need to know which reels formed each winning way.

The example is deliberately simplified because the live paytable governs the exact symbol values and evaluation order. Its purpose is to show why MultiMax has such a wide outcome range.
